eve of a pivotal moment for the institution of marriage. supporters of same-sex marriage staged a march and rally in san francisco ahead of tomorrow's historic hearing on gay marriage in washington dc. we have live team coverage. patty lee will show us how a youngster rallied the crowd. we begin with heather holmes there have been rallies before none had quite the feel of this one. >> reporter: julie, hundreds of gay marriage advocates squeezed together like sardines here in front of city hall. along the crowd was optimism and anxiety, with one woman telling me this is it. >> we are ready we are equal. >> reporter: at the very place where nine years ago gay and lesbian couples first lined up for marriage licenses in california, one more cry for equality. >> a new era in our country when loving couples may say i

everybody thank you for everything, the people they pray for my baby, police department everything, my baby is okay, thanks god and i will be happy and i want to say thank you thank you thank you. >> reporter: ktvu was the only camera to capture the rescue of 11 month old gabriella the officer just lifted her from her car seat where she was crouched but not strapped n crying and confused. >> she was distraught, kind of lost, so she was happy i think to see us. >> reporter: riding with her to the hospital she calmed and played with a toy in the ambulance. >> some body stole my car with my baby in it. >> reporter: for neighbors it started with a mothers scream. her jeep was in the drive way, keys in ignition just before 7:00 a.m. her daughter in the car when she went back inside briefly and someone stole it.

jeep for clues to who took it, again possibly a white or la tina woman seen here in the neighbourhood this morning. she is just 4 days away from her first birthday, indeed it will be a happy one. in 15 minutes, technology that helped police track down that stolen suv how police agencies around the bay area are tracking license plates. new details about a stand off and shooting in castro valley we first told you about last friday night. the sheriff's office identified the man involved in that incident as terrence barry he was shot twice by a sergeant and died yesterday afternoon officials say he had threatened to shoot it out with deputies and appeared to have an assault weapon it turned out to be a fake. we asked authorities to see it today they provided this photograph. he had pointed it at the deputy but turned out to be a home made device that could not be

fired. authorities in santa clara county are making plans to destroy 600 guns collected at a gun buy back event over the weekend but first, law enforcement showed them to ktvu, and fired back at critics who suggest buy backs don't make the streets any safer. >> the most dangerous to me is the mac 10, 45. >> reporter: some of the guns. >> ak-47s across the front. >> reporter: better suited for a war zone than streets of the south bay. >> law enforcements worst nightmare is coming upon these weapons the more we get off the street the better. >> reporter: they collected more than 600 unwanted guns including 17 assault weapons during an anonymous gun buy back at reid hill view airport on top of more than 1,000 turned in earlier this month. >> you wonder where these have been lying around, probably not in gun safes, not with trigger locks. >> reporter: the supervisor said the county paid out more than $60,000 at the most recent

a retired firefighter heads to sacramento to fight for a chain knowledge regulation she hopes will save lives -- change in regulation he hopes will save lives. amber. >> reporter: we are at fire station number 35 here along the san francisco water front the retired fire captain suffered a rare form of kidney cancer tells us he doesn't want others to suffer the same or deal. >> probably nasty, oilchemicals from different fires. >> reporter: this blackened helmet is what he wore the 27 years he worked for san francisco fire department. it is a treasured item but a reminder what forced him into early retirement a decade ago, a boyhood dream cut short. >> i was peeing blood. within one week i knew i had kidney cancer. >> reporter: his doctor told him it likely resulted from

exposure to toxic chemicals such as those found in flame retardants. >> when we walk into a building on fire we are working in a toxic chemical atmosphere. >> reporter: more than 100 san francisco firefighters have died from cancer in the past 10 years many are battling it in retirement. retardants are required in foam cushions. >> 67,308 as of this evening. >> reporter: he started an online petition to gather signatures of support a week and a half ago, tomorrow he plans to testify about the dangers of flame retardant and ask state officials to support a resolution. he loved his work as a firefighter especially conducting special rescues

in eastern contra costa county left a driver and his passenger dead. a passer by who desperately tried to rescue that pair. >> reporter: it is a two lain highway in the shadow of mount diablo. this stretch of state route 4 was the site of a fatal accident this morning. just before 10:00 a.m. a male driver in a toyota four runner and his female passenger ended up trapped upside down in 4 feet of water. >> the vehicle drifted off the shoulder to the right, crossed through the right shoulder area down into a drainage canal. >> reporter: several drivers stopped to help. >> i got a bar here in the truck and handed it over to those guys they were trying to top door. >> reporter: the good samaritans and emergency responders couldn't get to the victims in time. they were pronounced dead at the scene. people who drive this part of highway 4 are familiar with

grounded since january because one battery caught fire and another began smoking. more tests are needed before boeing gets clearance from safety regulators. yahoo! purchased a mobile news start up created by 15-year-old british boy. it is an app that scans news articles and give as snapshot of stories small enough to fit on an iphone screen. one tech blog says yahoo! paid $30 million for the app, 90% in cash, 10% in stock. apple made a large purchase acquiring wi-fi slam for $20 million. the palo alto based start up is developing a way to use wi-fi hot spots to navigate inside spaces. it should help create a better mapping system following the company's split and google maps. new worries about the european debt crisis put a damper on stock prices markets

she said 40 million americans have no paid sick days forcing them to work while ill or lose pay. supreme court announced it will consider a michigan law banning affirmative action, in college admissions. a federal appeals court struck down the michigan law last year, ruling it unconstitutional. in 1996, california voters passed proposition 209 which struck down affirmative action programs in california's public university. opponents say if the high court up holds the lower court ruling in the michigan case it opens the doors to challenge if california law. in news of the world in afghanistan, u.s. secretary of state, met with karzai and resolved some recent differences he said the u.s. was in collusion with the taliban to keep afghanistan weak. today he said he was

francisco's largest hotel and union workers have reached an agreement on a new labor contract that they hope will serve as a template. the hilton at union square agreed to increase wages 4%, each year of the 5 year deal. mayor ed lee says workers need to feel secure to help support the city's overall tourism goals. >> they can take care of their families and themselves for years to come and take care of visitors, thousands of them. >> the hilton and union negotiators reached their agreement before the current contract expired this summer others in the city are still in negotiations. five people in the running to fill a board of supervisors position. the former board member pleaded guilty to misusing tax payer money to fuel his gambling habit. potential candidates for district two seat must pay a $1,400 filing fee, gather
